SUMMARY

Underwrite new and renewal ocean marine accounts (monoline marine general liability, marine legal liability, land-based property, water-based property, inland marine, hull, protection & indemnity, and packages) profitably in accordance with established company guidelines. Works closely with the underwriting team to market, underwrite and monitor profitability of the book of business for the department. New business production responsibilities as assigned by AVP-Marine.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Select, underwrite, review terms, conditioning and pricing new, renewal and referral business, that will produce an underwriting profit, in accordance with ACIC’s underwriting standards and personal underwriting authority level.
  • Review submissions and existing accounts to identify exposure and risk from information provided, as well as through investigative and discovery procedures using additional internal and external resources.
  • Handle related servicing on accounts and implement corrective measures as needed.
  • Maintain an acceptable loss ratio on all marine business for which individual is responsible.
  • Assist AVP-Marine on special projects as requested.
  • Participate in audits and/or underwriting meetings as required.
  • Provide prompt and friendly service to our external and internal customers. 
  • Interact internally and externally in a courteous, professional manner.
  • Travel by automobile or plane to agents to effectively communicate company strategy and guidelines.
  • Other functions may be assigned as business conditions change.


Relationship Manager

  • The Underwriter is responsible for several General Agents and is the point of contact for that agency and its personnel for new and renewal business.
  • The Underwriter is responsible for monitoring production; hit ratios, renewal retention ratios and other production and quality measures.
  • Possesses a working knowledge of all of ACIC’s products and is able to perform website training.


Market Research/Intelligence:

  • Gathers market data for new markets, products, and or segments and works with the AVP - Marine to identify new production opportunities and track competitor activity.
  • Gathers and reports information through visit reports, team briefings and market updates for the ACIC’s underwriting personnel.

 

Training/Mentoring:

  • Provides informal and formal underwriting training as required.
  • Mentors less experienced ACIC underwriting personnel on work flow, processing and rating, market conditions, competitors, relationship management, etc.


Documentation/Underwriting Standards:

  • Meets all file documentation standards, complies with underwriting and authority level standards, and passes all audits (both internal and external);
  • Responsible for conducting regular and periodic underwriting self-review;
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of ACIC’s forms and endorsements, including various manuscript forms required on more complex accounts;
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of, the requirements of the ACIC’s rating and underwriting methodology and ACIC’s reinsurance contracts.


Regional Leadership:

  • Works with the AVP - Marine to establish and attain General Agency Marketing Plans and assist in agency development;
  • Consistently achieves targeted GA Market Plan.

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • A 4-year college degree from an accredited institution is strongly desired, but not required
  • A minimum of 1 year E&S Company P&C underwriting or general agency P&C underwriting experience.
  • Professional designations such as CPCU, ASLI, AU or CIC are preferred.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as underwriting manuals, emails, faxes and procedural manuals.
  • Ability to write routine correspondence in the English language using correct grammar and spelling.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Skill and ability to use and operate a computer, phone system and copier.
  • Ability to type 40 WPM.
  • Must have a working knowledge of general liability, property and package underwriting, and be familiar with endorsements, including pro-rata and short-rate computations.
  • Working knowledge of ocean marine, inland marine and excess is highly desired, but not mandatory.
  • Working knowledge of most Microsoft programs such as Word and Excel.
  • Excellent organization and communication skills, oral and written, are also a must.

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of instructions in written or diagram form.
  • Reasoning; dealing with problems involving complex variables in most situations.
  • Candidate must possess and be able to apply logical thinking skills and have the ability to “think outside the box”.
